A bit about CF (Not a blurb by the charity, but by me, a person who has it!)
Ok, whats CF? In a nutshell, its a fucker of a thing to have haha ! Ok but seriously:
Basically, CF's are born with a faulty Gene. Without getting complicated, this messes up the lungs and digestive system, big time.
Our lungs are prone to infection alot more than healthy people, and as we get more infections, this scars our lungs making it harder to expand them and breath. In turn this brings on its own problems such as CO2 levels being too high (this is the gas you breath out) and O2 levels being too low because the scarring, as well as other things, make the Oxygen transfer into the bloodstream harder to deal with, and obviously, we need Oxygen to function ! Too much CO2 gives you MAJOR headaches, makes you sick and basically makes you feel TERRIBLE. Not nice
Our digestive system basically is fucked. We cant digest food in our stomachs like you, because we have no, or very few, enzymes to eat away at the fatty foods. This is why im seeing taking handfulls (9 per meal, which is TINY amount compared to some friends) of pills every time I eat. If I dont, I end up with a huge stomach ache the next day and it will last a LONG time.
Thats the REALLY basic version of CF. theres secondary problems with it like arthritis (PAIN!) Diabeties (Which makes your chest infections worse if not VERY well controlled) and many more things besides. I Personally am also deaf because of medication side effects, and know of two other CF's who are the same.
We can still live life to the full, dont get me wrong ! You will see me getting pissed with everyone else, and doing plenty of other things my friends do. Ul see CF friends of mine getting married, having Children (I cant have kids btw, 97% of males with CF cant) and hell, you will even see the nuttier ones going sky diving, Abseiling or running Marathons, all for CF (Most of the time!)
The downside to this is we know theres a large chance we wont be around to see those kids we have grow into teens and adults (Unless we are VERY well, or have a lung transplant) but that doesnt stop most of us, and good, because it shouldn't
